Chapter 16 follows the line from Saxelby Tunnel, through Holwell Junction and Asfordby Tunnel to Melton Mowbray. Later in the chapter, there are specific sections on Holwell Works, Holwell and Welby Sidings, and Asfordby Colliery. Details of the iron ore branches are in Chapter 17.

After leaving Saxelby Tunnel (number 54), the line runs east through a short cutting and onto a heavy embankment at Holwell Junction. You will need binoculars to see Bridge 55, but there is nothing unusual about this Farm Access bridge.

Originally a Farm Access bridge, the adjacent footpath was officially diverted over it in 2002. Presumably there used to be a crossing at this point, although in practice everyone crossed the line over the bridge. The footpath can be accessed from Asfordby Bypass, which opened in May 1989.
